About Us
The Kari-Oca Caravan, “The Road to Rio”, is being organized by Land is Life, a coalition of indigenous communities and organizations form around the world. LiL itself was founded in May of 1992 at Kari-Oca I – The World Conference of Indigenous Peoples on Territories, Environment and Development.
Twenty years later, indigenous leaders from the grassroots will travel to Rio de Janeiro to participate in Kari-Oca II and Rio+20. The Kari-Oca Caravana will start the conversation well before Rio+20 as the caravans travel through South America, picking up indigenous participants along the road to Rio. The voices of the world’s indigenous peoples will be heard in Rio.
The caravans will be welcomed by Marcos Terena, Land is Life Steering Council member and lead organizer for Kari-Oca II, and representatives of the indigenous peoples of Brazil.
